So, what now?

Hey guys, this is it. The end of the After Subtract. After 3+ years of making this comic, it's finally done. But I'm sure I left a post similar like this in the Author Comment so I don't need to say again how happy I am to be done haha.

Anyway, as the title suggests, what's next? Well, I've been getting constant questioning about whether I'd be doing Adding Zero right after this comic ended and I have to say, no, not yet. The reason being is that I'm not very happy with my spriting abilities so far. I've done okay with backgrounds and a few edits here and there but I want to do a lot more practice before I jump into Adding Zero.

That being said, I don't know when I'll start back up. I really want to create some better backgrounds for the place as well as do a few other sprites so it could take me a while. That's why The After Subtract ended like it did; it's an end to a comic, not a beginning to another. You'll hear from me when I do finally start it up, but for now, it's going to stay down. Don't worry, it won't be like a year or anything like that, I just need time.

Also, I've been meaning to finish my site a long time ago and we're very close to finishing soon. I'm going to be getting on the authors who are going to be on the site to help me finish it up very soon, I'm thinking in the next 2 weeks. I'll post up something when its up.

People have also been mentioning that I should update the cast page, and when I do so, I'll update that on my other website, of which you'll find that out soon enough. It'll have everyone from that one big picture in "The After Subtract Pt. 2" so look forward to that soon enough.

There's one other thing that I haven't done, and thats credit all of the people who helped me and all of the sprites I've used. I'll be sure to create a credits page and put it up, but it'll be in the extras section (or on a separate page) because I don't want to get you guys's hopes up like I'm updating or something.

I think that's all. If anyone wants to discuss anything with me, I'll still be checking the site quite frequently, at least twice a day, and I'm available for PM all of the time, so feel free to ask me things. Thanks guys, and thanks for the 3+ years of The After Subtract. :D

Author Applications

Alright guys, before I post up exactly what you need to do, here's a few tidbits of information to help those who are confused.

What's going on

This will pretty much be a multi-author comic site. Each author will have their own comic(s) and their own pages to do what they want with them. This means you'll have just about all the same features as you would premium status here at SmackJeeves, though you will not have your own URL and you won't have super special advertising like you do here. You'll be on the front page, but remember, we'll have different traffic than SJ does.

Most likely we'll keep our comics on this site as well. Whether or not we'll continue updating on this site will be debated once the team is created. I would like no one to comment on this as I want the entire team to decide on this, not the fans. You guys would have a little bias, no offense.

The team will most likely consist of 7-8 members, including myself and LoneAlchemist. That leaves about 5-6 spots, give or take 1 or 2 depending on how many applications we get and how good those applications are.

Stuff we really don't care about

These are basically things that your comic may have that we really don't mind you having. In other words, having these things won't hurt your chances.

- Sonic/Megaman/-insert popular character name here- comics: As long as it's got a unique spin on it, it won't hurt your chances to have these guys in your comics.
- Art style: A good art style certainly helps you here, I'll say that. But if you don't have the greatest effects but still have a good comic, we'd still love to have you. Just beware that having awesome effects but a terrible story DOES hurt you.
- Update schedule: I cannot stress this enough. It's perfectly fine if you don't update a whole lot. I completely understand. I want you to update as it looks good and I will probably be a fan of your comic, but it's perfectly fine if you're not a solid updater. It happens. We'll discuss this more when the team meets though. I don't expect everyone to update all the time, but someone needs to.
- Experience: It's nice to see experienced authors, but I'd like to give everyone a chance. If you run good comics then your experience doesn't really matter.
- Current number of comics: By comics I mean this in the number of strips one comic has. If it has potential, it doesn't matter how many you have. Though you should probably have more than 20 so I can see whether it's going somewhere or not.

Basically, here's what we're looking for in authors.

- Dedicated, friendly people: And by dedicated I don't mean by update schedule. Again, look at my schedule. But that does mean that you can't just be lazy. I can understand writer's block or life getting in the way but not writing just because isn't being dedicated. By friendly I just mean you're not a jerk. If you are a jerk...well then you better have a good comic. (example: LoneAlchemist) :3
- Social authors: You don't have to comment on like every post, but it's good to see authors interacting with their fans and fellow authors. It shows humility and respect. If not then just regular news posts is always a good thing. We're probably going to get a forum so it'd be nice to see interaction there too.
- Good spelling and grammar: What? What?! Is it wrong to ask for people who spell nicely?! Haha but seriously guys, good spelling and grammar just makes you look professional. Every now and then you miss things and that's fine, but if it's obvious, it negatively reflects on yourself and the rest of the site in some cases.

Actually that's pretty much all we're looking for in authors. We don't have a whole lot of qualifications.

As for comics themselves, I'd actually like to keep that secret. I want a lot of different authors to apply. The only thing I'd probably note is that author comics probably will not make their way through. I'm sure you can guess why.

Basically, PM me with the following:

Name: (Not your real one)
Preferred Name: (If you want to shorten or change your name, now would be the time)
Age: (This won't effect your application, it'd just be nice to know. You don't have to say if you don't want to)
Timezone: (I have my reasons)
Webcomic Experience: (Both reading and creating)
Link to your best work: (The entire comic, not just a single strip)
Why you want to be on the team: (Be specific)
About yourself: (Tell us anything you wish for us to know)
Final comments: (This is up to you what you want to put here. You don't have to put anything really)

I will stop accepting applications on August 14th 11:59 EST. From then you'll here from me about what will occur. Good luck everyone!

My Future Project

So, recently I've been making a few observations about the future of sprite comics. Or rather, how sprite comic sites are doing in general. For the most part, sprite comic sites tend to get a lot of good traffic because they're more diversified, but they've been declining recently. Some of my favorite comics like Sonic and Pals and Heroes Inc. as well as sites like DrShnaps & Mystic Forest Zone aren't seeing a whole lot of action recently for various reasons. It's a shame to me because I felt like I've really grown up on sprite comics and I've met a lot of different people through these networks and picked up a lot of wisdom from these comics. Indirectly, of course. I know very few sprite comics that actually teach things.

But I digress. The point is that sprite comic sites are declining and it's really a shame. That's what my project is. When Drshnaps closed down for a bit, the admin got us all websites so we could continue our comics and do what we want with the sites (don't ask him for one though, he's not giving these out). Originally I wanted to just create a site for the comic, but then I had a great idea.

Create another sprite comic site. A site for great sprite authors to post their stuff just like Drshnaps was. Hopefully from there I can get some affiliates with some of the 'top' sprite comics and from there some sprite authors and I will make ourselves a great site.

However, I can't do it alone. I'm going to need some authors soon enough, and when I learn all the code and Drshnaps gives me the control, I'll start the recruiting process.

Let me repeat myself. I AM NOT ASKING FOR HELP AT THIS TIME. Once everything's ready to get set up, I'll put up a whole rule list of things I'm looking for in authors and their comics, as well as what I'm completely fine with as far as a comic and other things like that. Trust me, when everything's up and running, you'll know. I even have a few authors in mind who I want on my team (though I'm hoping they'd like to be on mine...).

Until then, if you're interested, it won't hurt to make yourself look good. I will say right now that I don't care about the length of your comic or even if you're thinking about starting one at the moment, nor do I care the genre, what sprites you use, etc. I'll post the full list of qualifications soon enough.

There is one thing though. I'm still undecided whether or not I'll leave Smack Jeeves to do so. I think when I get my team together, we'll decide on that as a group, but for now... I'm not sure. Again, I'll let you know.

Oh, and I do have something up online already, but due to reasons of construction and all, I'll keep that secret until it's presentable.

Stay cool guys. Can't wait to see how this goes.

About the Comic

Hey guys. Afro here. Recently, it seems like it's been getting harder and harder to make the comic. And I've come to realize that one of those reasons is that I'm at a serious part of the story where usually I'm a comedy writer. That's why I like updating so much early on in the comic and why now I'm just so bored of it.

Nevertheless, this comic isn't that long. I know it's ending soon and should be done soon. I can't give a good estimate of how many pages exactly, but it'll probably be done by the time summer stars in June. If I'm lucky anyway, I'm so lazy nowadays...

I really do want to update and get this off my chest so I can get back into Adding Zero, as I have tons of ideas for that, but this is still in the way. That isn't to say that the ideas for this one aren't there or good. They're still in motion and I'd love to get to the next part soon. But again, I'm just so unmotivated right now so we'll see how it plays out.

Sorry I couldn't get March Madness finished. I realize now that one of the reasons why it was so easy to do the Christmas comic in such a short period of time was because it was a lot more fun to do, while here it's just...not as fun. I miscalculated, please excuse me.

Anyway, thanks for reading, much appreciated to all the fans who've stuck by me, and I hope to get some more comics out soon...

March Madness!!!

If you didn't know already, it's March Madness for webcomic makers on SJ (and I think in other places, idk). Either way, if you didn't know what that is, it's when an author attempts to update every day throughout the month! It's a seriously challenging commitment and I'm putting myself to the challenge. Why? Because I've had a lot of unexcused absences this year and it's time I paid you guys back for it. Will I succeed?

Probably not. I'm pretty sure it's going to be tough to manage all my time to get all those comics in. BUT. I promise you this. 20-31 comics will be made by the end of the month. I'm pretty sure I will be able to do weekdays and Sunday, but you never know what something will happen, so I'm going to attempt to cover my losses now.

I really want to live up to this challenge, and I hope I can crank out enough comics in that time. Who knows? If I miss a day I might just update twice on another day. The challenge IS 31 comics in 1 month, not update everyday ;). And I'm pretty confident in my writing skills since I'm practically done the writing for this chapter (and the next because it was already written by the beginning).

Either way, I'm ready to try. Let's see if I can do it, my wondrous fans!

EDIT: Yeah, I realize now that March Madness is for drawn comics (just read the rules -_-') but that's not going to stop me anyway! So shut up! D:

Hey guys, good to be back

Alright, so here's what happened. My update schedule just sort of fell out of whack a few weeks ago and I just couldn't get back into the grove anymore. Plus, I had a few things to deal with and just couldn't do anything with those issues floating around. I apologize for not really saying anything, but a lot of it I didn't want floating around the internet, and I still don't. Hope you guys understand.

As for the update schedule, I really need to catch up on all the holidays I've missed! What this means is I'm going to do something for Christmas this year that I've been putting off for a while and have really wanted to do. I had a blast last year with writing last years comic, especially with the first one, so...that should be hint enough of what I'm doing. ;)

Unfortunately, because I'll be doing that, I won't be updating until Christmas Eve so I have enough time to make all the comics like I did last year. I'm hoping for a lot more comics than I did last year though, with a ton more humor and...well I don't want to spoil too much, hehe. But it will be more comics than last year. I'm aiming for 7+ comics, and this time I'm actually writing it in advance, so we'll see how that goes. In the meantime, I hope you guys are okay with me not updating.

Good news about updating is that I'll be getting a new laptop for Christmas with a lot better RAM, meaning GIMP won't freeze on me nearly as much and I should be able to update on a regular basis again. Again, debatable, but we'll see what happens.

Adding Zero...is still debatable. Adding Zero probably be put on hiatus due to my co-author not being able to update and me being swamped with all the work I still have to do. I'll see what I can do, but when I do update that, it'll probably be sparingly.

As for the rest of the story, we'll see how it goes. I don't want to spoil anything, hehe. Anyway, thanks for reading everyone, and I'll see you all on Christmas Eve!

As some of you may know, Afro is on vacation this week, so the schedule is a little off, but the new comic is up, and there should be a new one up friday.

I also want to wish all of our loyal viewers a good summer. Have fun on vacations, being out of school, or just enjoying the nice weather.

Donator Status!

Yep. The Aftersubtract is officially a donator. I felt like being a charitable person. :D

Also, if you haven't seen it already, we're also on the TopWebcomics list, so when you can, VOTE! Sooner or later, I'll start adding incentives.

Oh, and in this occasion, I shall be accepting sprites for cameos. It'll be about 4 people PLUS the person I've already selected. (You know who you are) You don't have to be l33t, just make sure you PM the personality with the sprites. You'll have about a week, maybe 2 depending on how many sprites I get.

And who knows! You may just show up more than once in this comic. :D
